A proposal to rezone a piece of land for private student housing near Texas State University has been killed.
San Marcos resident John Meeks told
Community Impact Newspaper Monday he withdrew the application to
rezone his 6.7-acre property on Peques Street and amend the city of San Marcos's Preferred Scenario Map—which dictates how the city grows and where development can generally occur—to allow for student housing.
He said there are no plans at this time to do anything with the property, which is vacant.
"We still feel like [student housing] is the best option for that property," Meeks said.
He said his intent was to work with Chicago-based student housing developer Core Spaces to build a five-story, 500-bed building on his property, which abuts the Timbers student housing complex.
The San Marcos Planning and Zoning Commission
unanimously recommended City Council deny his rezoning and map amendment application on March 27. Because the commission's decision was unanimous, Meeks would have needed City Council to approve his application with a supermajority vote on May 15. The first City Council public hearing on the application was scheduled for April 17.
Meeks said at a neighborhood meeting prior to the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in March that if his application was denied, he would “hold the property” and keep it in the family.
