The next election for City Council will be held Nov. 7 and include the positions of mayor, District 2 and District 4.
Mitchell has served on the dais for several years. Prior to being elected mayor, Mitchell served as the council member for District 1 from June 2016 to November 2017. After his time on council, Mitchell ran for mayor and has served two consecutive terms: November 2017 to November 2020 and November 2020 to November 2023.
“The truth is I wasn't sure if I was going to run for a second term, but the longer I've been in office, the more I've realized that it takes sometimes years in order to complete and fulfill a vision, and there are a lot of projects going on in the city right now that are extremely important that we stay focused on and complete,” Mitchell told Community Impact.
Per Article III of the city's charter, no person elected to the council in 2011 or thereafter shall serve more than three consecutive regular terms of office. If elected, this will be Mitchell's last term in office.
According to Mitchell's campaign announcement, if re-elected and with continued council support, he will continue to work on the city's voter-approved regional Sportsplex partnership with Hays County, use developer funds and special districting financing to complete the new Goforth Road from FM 150 at Post Oak south to Yarrington and I-35, expand the city's parks system by adding at least one new major Eastside park, and develop a partnership with the private sector to bring new businesses and restaurants to downtown Kyle.
“I do think it's important for me to continue moving forward with the community because it's vital that we maintain city leadership in a clear vision over these projects. It's just too important for us to change direction,” he said.
Mitchell's sole contender thus far for the mayor seat is District 2 Council Member Yvonne Flores-Cale. Flores-Cale announced her candidacy for Kyle mayor in a Facebook post June 13.
Mitchell emphasized he is fully invested in the city.
“My future is here in the city of Kyle,” he said. “This is a community I love, and I will continue to work tirelessly for the city so long as the voters will have me.”
