The Spot, an entertainment facility planned to include a movie theater, bowling lanes, restaurant, bar and a stage for live music, will open Oct. 14 at 1180 Thorpe Lane, San Marcos, owner Mitchell Roberts said.
Roberts, president of EVO Entertainment Group, the company behind the concept, said the details of the Oct. 14 grand opening are still being determined, but “it will be a big event.”
“It looks great. I couldn’t be any more excited about this one,” Roberts said. “It’s always special when you get to…do something that is so groundbreaking and game-changing, but to do it in the town I grew up in is that much better.”
Roberts said The Spot has already garnered interest from international trade publications interested in viewing the facility. The Spot will include six dine-in movie theater screens, eight lanes of boutique bowling as well as a venue for live music, an event space, social lounges and an outdoor patio. The 36,000-square-foot facility will occupy the space formerly occupied by Target.
The project is part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Springtown Mall, which has been largely vacant since 2009.
The Spot will be restricted to guests 18 years and older, according to a news release. Roberts said children will be allowed if they are accompanied by an adult.
"It’s interesting to see how far San Marcos has come and to be a part of its innovation and growth."

Roberts previously described the look and feel of the Spot as a modern speakeasy with “different social elements” than what he has seen in other movie theater concept. Roberts declined to divulge more details, saying he hoped to keep some elements of the design a surprise for guests.
EVO Entertainment Group also owns and operates EVO, an entertainment concept featuring movie theaters, bowling lanes, an arcade, restaurant and bar.
"[Opening the Spot] feels great," he said. "It’s interesting to see how far San Marcos has come and to be a part of its innovation and growth."
On Sept. 6, San Marcos City Council approved the first readings of a collection of ordinances that would allow a 5-story mixed-use development to be built adjacent to the Spot. The mixed-use development, which would include 459 bedrooms as well as a collection of retailers on the ground floor, would occupy the former location of Best Buy.
