The details
Council approved a new mobile command center unit for over $1.5 million. The vehicle will be equipped with technology that helps personnel communicate in the field during emergencies, events or similar operations.
The new vehicle will be an upgrade from a command bus that has reached the end of its operational use. The older model was purchased through a grant and the department was able to negotiate a $30,000 trade-in value for the older model.
Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks stated that the department's attempt to acquire the new command bus via a similar grant was unsuccessful.
“We took every avenue, but were unsuccessful in obtaining the grant,” Banks said.
The new command center unit is designed for a lifespan of 25-30 years, with components and technology that are upgradeable.
What else?
Additionally, the Round Rock Fire Department requested funds to purchase four separate vehicles totaling roughly $2.9 million.
The city approved the purchase of a mini pumper truck for $400,100. This compact vehicle is designed to access and fight fires in areas that are inaccessible to larger fire trucks. These funds stem from a 2023 voter-approved bond.
An Air Truck—at a total cost of $520,000—will also be used to provide compressed breathing air to refill air tanks, supply additional tanks and more. This purchase will replace an air trailer and a truck specifically used to pull it.
A Skeeter Rescue Side Brush Truck—at a cost of $$277,535—is designed for severe-duty wildland firefighting and various terrains. This will replace a brush truck purchased in 2011.
The department also requested approximately $1.7 million for a new ladder truck. The vehicle has an expandable ladder used for rescue, ventilation and providing aerial access to high-rise buildings. It will replace a truck purchased in 2009.
According to city documents the delivery of these vehicles could vary between 20-36 months.
