Round Rock City Council will consider a construction contract for the Town Green project at its meeting July 24. The $4.8 million agreement with Mills Development and Construction will create a public gathering space in historic downtown Round Rock.

About the project

The Town Green project spans from Liberty Avenue to Main Street between Blair and Mays streets. This square, centered around the historic water tower, will receive several upgrades, including:
  • Wooden deck seating
  • Synthetic and natural turf social lawns
  • Pedestrian plazas
  • Food truck parking
  • Renovation of the Johnson Building to include restrooms
  • ADA improvements, signage and landscaping
If approved, the project would begin in early August, according to Parks and Recreation Director Rick Atkins. The construction would last approximately seven months.

Digging deeper

Because the project site is surrounded by businesses and resident activity, the contractor will have to work in tight confines around heavy daily foot and car traffic, according to city documents.

“We’re going to feel a little bit of pain, but I think at the end of this thing, I think everybody can be happy we did this thing up,” Atkins said.

Since construction will likely last through the end of the year, Atkins said the city will try to limit interference with holiday activities downtown.

“We’re going to try and work through that as fast as we can,” Atkins said.
