The Texas Education Agency released statewide and district-specific test scores for the STAAR on June 17.
What you need to know
Statewide trends show an improvement in reading scores across almost every grade level, varied degrees of performance on the math assessment and "marked improvement" in science scores.
The TEA uses a four-tiered grading system for student performance to score STAAR test performance in each subject:
- Did not meet grade level
- Approaches grade level
- Meets grade level
- Masters grade level
The local impact
In RRISD, data for passing scores show students performed:
- Above state average in 13 subjects
- Below state average in one subject, 7th grade math
43% of RRISD students scored "approaches grade level" or higher on 7th grade math in 2025, down from 51% in 2024, while the state average for 2025 was 52%.
Students saw equal or improved performance year-over-year in all exams except:
- 4th grade math
- 5th grade math
- 3rd grade reading
- 4th grade reading
- 5th grade reading
- 8th grade social studies
“These results are encouraging and reflect the impact of the strategic supports we’ve implemented in recent years,” Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in a June 17 news release. “With [reading] scores now surpassing pre-pandemic levels, we are seeing meaningful signs of academic recovery and progress. While this year also saw some improvements in math, clearly more work is needed.”
