Round Rock City Council approved a service agreement for the Clay Madsen Recreation Center remodel project at its July 10 meeting.

The $215,732 contract with Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects is “the first step in kicking off this project,” Assistant Director of General Services Cory Amidon said.

About the project

As part of the 2023 voter-approved bond package, Round Rock will renovate the 55,000-square-foot Clay Madsen Recreation Center. The facility, constructed in 2000, will receive large-scale infrastructure maintenance, including:
  • A locker room remodel
  • Expansion of the weight room and multipurpose room
  • Expansion of the gymnasium
What’s new

The initial contract pays for services to develop a park master plan, including the expansion and remodel, as well as planning for future park development on the property following city acquisition of land directly north of the recreation center.

Also included in the agreement is a facility assessment of the existing recreation center to identify its rehabilitation needs.

“We know we have issues out there with that civil engineering,” Amidon said.

Looking ahead

Following the assessment and the park master plan, city staff will bring back a design for the rehabilitation for City Council approval. The master plan should be complete in about three months, according to Amidon.

“Our intent is to keep the facility open as much as possible during the renovation,” Amidon said. “There could be outages, but the intent is to keep it fully operational.”

Financing from the 2023 bond will cover the rehabilitation. A larger renovation and expansion of the property will be considered as a part of future bond items, according to City Manager Brooks Bennett.

“We'll get it back up to snuff as fast as possible, and then put together a long-term plan to present for future work,” Bennett said at a July 8 agenda packet briefing.
