What you need to know
Per a March 7 release from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's office, the grant is part of the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund, an incentive program to encourage semiconductor research, design and manufacturing in Texas.
The fund awards grants to state entities and higher educational institutions for manufacturing and design projects, as well as businesses like KoMiCo with established presences in the state.
What they're saying
“Texas is leading the American resurgence in semiconductor manufacturing and making strategic investments to secure critical domestic supply chains,” Gov. Abbott said in the release. “KoMiCo’s $36 million investment to expand their clean room capacity and production lines in Round Rock supports increased chip production right here in Texas. Thanks to industry leaders like KoMiCo growing their presence in our great state, we will continue to lead the nation in innovation and job creation as we build a stronger, more prosperous Texas than ever before.”
How we got here
In 2022, the city of Round Rock approved an economic development agreement with KoMiCo to expand its facility and add 70 jobs by Dec. 31, 2025. The agreement approved required $20 million in real property improvements and a $10 million investment in business personal property.
The agreement required a 40,000-square-foot expansion to the Round Rock facility to expand production capacity and support increased chip production.
