A new winery is expected to open soon in downtown Round Rock following the approval of a rezoning request.

A rezoning of the property located at 407 Round Rock Ave., formerly home to Round Rock Travel & Cruises and still bearing the business's signs, was approved June 22. Co-owned by Matt and Gabe Ellis, the winery is expected to open in September.

The approved rezoning request allows the property to change from a mixed-use downtown medium-density designation to that of a planned unit development, allowing the establishment to only serve alcohol, said Brad Wiseman, Round Rock's planning and development services director.

The Round Rock Avenue property is located outside of the downtown zoning district, which is subject to a cap on the total number of bars instituted last year, Wiseman said. The MU-1 district limited to a total of 11 bars is located within the bounds of South Brown Street in the east, the alley between East Austin Avenue and East Liberty Street to the north, North Burnet Street to its west, and Bagdad Avenue to its south.

The planned unit development also allows the winery and wine tasting room to host food trucks and expand to offer patio seating if certain criteria are met.
