A new specialty grocery store is bringing a variety of European flavors, crafts and a taste of Georgian culture to Round Rock.

About the business

Locally owned by Khatia Pipia and her husband, David, Qvevri Georgian & European Market offers European dairy, meats, snacks, desserts and other specialty items.

Pipia said the shop is focused on sharing the Georgian culture with the community, including food, wine, handmade scarves and other merchandise imported from the eastern European nation.

Did you know?

The shop is named for a method of wine making specific to Georgia that dates back over 8,000 years.

Pipia said Qvevri wine is fermented in clay jars and buried in the ground to keep the temperature consistent. Several different types of Qvevri wine are stocked in the store, which is decorated with art representing the history and cultural importance of wine making in Georgia.

Among the items available at Qvevri is handmade jewelry, some of which are Pipia's own designs, she said. Called minankari, the jewelry making method is characteristic to Georgia, she said. Her designs are crafted there by artisans before being imported back to the U.S.

In their own words

"This is not only a shop for us," Pipia said. "This is an experience. We want everyone who comes here to feel welcome, to feel at home."
