The backstory
Owner Suzette Reynoso-Bivens became a mother in 2021 and felt a lack of support after moving away from home in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I felt very lonely and isolated, and I would go online and chat with all these online mom Facebook groups to try to connect with other moms," Reynoso-Bivens said. "A theme that was recurring was that we need a space."
With support from her family and friends, she opened the business on Mays Street and began offering reservation times for interested individuals to experience the space. While she was inspired to create the cafe after her own experiences, Reynoso-Bivens said the project has manifested into something greater than she imagined.
“It was something that I was missing and I knew that it’s kind of like, ‘Build it and my people will find me’,” Reynoso-Bivens said. “I’ve created some of the best relationships and best friendships through Tot Box Play Cafe.”What makes it special?
Reynoso-Bivens said in addition to the community aspect of the space, the cafe has been a setting for special milestones, including a baby’s first steps and first birthday parties.
“Most recently, a mom just started screaming and we thought something was wrong and she started crying and she was like, ‘He just took his first steps,’” Reynoso-Bivens said. “Parents will always remember where they took their first steps and I’m beyond grateful and blessed to have the space we can share those moments with.”What they offer
The business offers a play area for children, ages 10 months-6 years old. Customers can reserve the space for private parties on weekends and attend special events featuring the cafe’s newest mascot, Teddy.
Interested customers can book two-hour time slots for reserve space at the cafe as the space is limited and limits the amount of kids allowed at once, Reynoso-Bivens said.Quote of note
“I think it’s a symbol of celebration,” Reynoso-Bivens said. “We celebrate who we are, we celebrate our community and we celebrate the chapter we are in in life. For moms and motherhood, it can be challenging to celebrate our small wins because we give so much of ourselves so I wanted moms to feel seen and validated here.”
