After being selected by the Round Rock ISD board of trustees to fill the vacant Place 6 position, trustee Stuart Selvaggi announced Monday he would be resigning his post. With just two weeks in office, Selvaggi said he resigned because it was in the best interest of his family and the district. “It was a tough decision to come to, but ultimately, it is what is best for the students, staff and community,” Selvaggi said in a statement. Board President Diane Cox concurred that it was in the best interest of the district that Selvaggi resigned, but repeated that it was his decision to leave the post. Cox said the board will update the process by which they choose replacement trustees. Selvaggi resigns in light of district residents calling for him to vacate the post following a background check. In a letter to the board of trustees dated Aug. 24, Edmund Buckley and Marshall Sprigg, members of the Residents for Accountability and Transparency GPAC, raised concerns about Selvaggi related to his financial background and residency requirements. The two allege in the letter that Selvaggi only recently met residency requirements, living one year in Texas and six months in RRISD boundaries, on the date he submitted his application for trustee. The letter also cites public records that indicate multiple bankruptcies, evictions and foreclosures within the past 10 years. District spokesperson Maritza Gallaga said the board will begin discussion on how to adjust the appointment process during Tuesday night’s meeting and will determine next steps for replacement from there.
