In final comments at Thursday's Round Rock City Council meeting, longtime City Council member Kris Whitfield announced she would be stepping down from council, effective Oct. 6.

Whitfield plans to move with her husband to their vacation home in Wyoming.

"We just decided that at this stage in our life, we need to go while we can still enjoy it," Whitfield said.

Whitfield was first elected to council in May 2007. Her final meeting will take place on Sept. 28.

"There will be a big hole on this council for this city when you leave," Mayor Craig Morgan said.

Whitfield's vacant seat must be filled within 120 days of her last date on council, per state law. The city is projecting a special election will be held in December with candidate filing to occur in mid-October.
