An amendment to a Pflugerville ordinance allows visitors to carry concealed weapons into the city of Pflugerville Training and Community Center, 100 E. Main St., Ste. 500, which is where City Council meetings take place.
In January 2016, City Council prohibited open and concealed carry in government meetings spaces subject to the Open Meetings Act. That measure followed new Texas open carry gun laws that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.
On Tuesday night, council members briefly discussed changing the ordinance to allow concealed carry before voting.
“I’ve mulled this over,” Mayor Victor Gonzales said. “I’m a firm believer in carrying firearms legally and that citizens have the right to bear arms, but I’m a little uncomfortable [with it in] chambers.”
Gonzales voted against the amendment, as did Council Member Starlet Sattler. It passed 4-2. Open carry is still prohibited inside the facility.
A sign on the front door of the building states “No firearms,” will be changed to accommodate the new ordinance.
“Welcome to the Wild West,” Gonzales said upon completion of the vote.
