What happened
HISD trustees voted unanimously to select Pena, Fort Worth ISD's chief talent officer, as the next superintendent to lead HISD, following the departure of former Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas.
How we got here
In May, Estrada Thomas announced her retirement, prompting a superintendent search guided by community involvement. She was first hired in 2017, seeing the district through a period of high growth and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pena's first official day at HISD will be Sept. 1, district staff said.
