Progress on the 183 North Mobility Project continues as the highway's new northbound express lanes and direct connector opened in January, completing another piece of the major highway project.
The update
According to a news release from the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, the northbound express lanes between Burnet Road and SH 45 North opened Jan. 2. The northbound direct connector, which connects the highway to the express lanes, opened Jan. 31 and spans from the MoPac express lane to the 183 express lanes.
Mobility Authority officials also stated that:
- Drivers accessing Loop 360, Great Hills Trail or Braker Lane should follow signs to exit the MoPac express lane toward US 183 and use the existing direct connector to the US 183 general purpose lanes
- Drivers wishing to continue on the MoPac express lane to the Parmer Lane exit should stay to the right and continue in the MoPac express lane
- Drivers should be in the left lane to take the express lane direct connector to the 183 express lanes where they will continue until approaching the Duval Road/Anderson Mill Road exit, bypassing Loop 360, Great Hills Trail and Braker Lane
Some context
The $612 million project first broke ground in January 2022 and is being funded by the sale of toll revenue bonds, Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act funds and federal funding.
Once completed, the project will feature two express lanes in each direction on US 183. According to the Mobility Authority, the express lanes are slated to bring:
- 9-minute toll lane commutes by 2035
- 24 minute faster nontolled lane morning commutes by 2035
- 16 minute faster nontolled lane evening commutes by 2035
Part of the project's construction included a general-purpose lane to bring the number of nontolled lanes to four in each direction, which was completed in August 2024.
The completed project will also feature 4,200 feet of shared-use paths connecting bike lanes and 11 miles of Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks.
Looking ahead
According to the Mobility Authority, the southbound express lanes and direct connector to MoPac are slated to open in the coming months, although officials noted in a news release that construction timelines are subject to change.
The project is expected to reach total completion this year.
