Congress Avenue Urban Design Initiative

Project: The project will redesign Congress Avenue in downtown Austin to create a more pedestrian-friendly, multimodal configuration; first construction phase focuses on Cesar Chavez Street to Seventh Street, expanding sidewalks, adding pedestrian amenity zones, upgrading bikeway barriers and adding turn lanes for vehicle traffic.

Update: construction expected to begin early 2026

Hwy. 290 extension project


Project: The project seeks to reduce congestion along 15 miles of Hwy. 290 between Hwy. 130 and Hwy. 95 South in Bastrop County.

Ongoing projects

DB Wood Road Phase 1

Project: The project will add four 12-foot wide lanes, a center turn lane and a shared-use path from Hwy. 29 to Oak Ridge Road in Georgetown.


Update: all four lanes are set to be open to traffic by March 31, with project completion in July

Old Stagecoach Road widening and Center Street improvements

Project:
Old Stagecoach Road in Kyle will be widened to a four-lane roadway from Veterans Drive to Main Street with work completed in four parts: north portion of Old Stagecoach Road from Veterans Drive to Six Creeks Boulevard, Old Stagecoach Road from Six Creeks Boulevard to Center Street, Center Street from Old Stagecoach Road to Veterans Drive, and three lanes from Veterans Drive to Main Street.

Update: project is in final design phase

Completed projects

183 North Mobility Project northbound express lane


Project:
The project includes construction of two express lanes in each direction on US 183 in Austin, a general-purpose lane to bring the number of non-tolled lanes to four in each direction, new shared use path connections, new sidewalks and cross-street connections for bicycles and pedestrians.

Update: northbound express lanes opened Jan. 2; northbound connector from the MoPac express lane and US 183 express lane is slated to open next, followed by the southbound express lanes and southbound connectors in the coming months

  • Cost: $612 million

Menchaca Road

Project:
The city plans to increase multimodal safety along Menchaca Road in Austin from William Cannon Drive to Ravenscroft Drive.

Update: project completed in August, creating a one-lane protected bike lane along this route
