Much like they did with their smaller restaurant in South Austin, brothers Amir and Ali Hajimaleki worked to create a dining environment at Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar with a decidedly urban vibe.

Amir, who serves as executive chef, said the idea at Oasthouse is to cater to a variety of crowds whether diners are looking for a date-night location or an upscale place for families.

“We felt like we could bring a downtown feel into a neighborhood community that is really full of fast-casual chains and Tex-Mex,” he said. “We wanted to bring a little bit different environment to the neighborhood.”

Oasthouse refers to the name of buildings traditionally used by brewers to kiln, or dry, hops using hot air from a wood or charcoal fire.

The restaurant’s seasonal menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and dinner entrees. The restaurant also offers lunch and a children’s menu as well as happy hour and weekend brunch options.

Food is complemented with a craft beer selection, wine and a cocktail menu that also changes seasonally.

Amir said the food at Oasthouse, which opened in November 2015, is influenced by eastern European and German cuisine but with a Texas twist using locally sourced ingredients.

Entrees include a veal schnitzel ($17.99) with German bacon potato salad and pickled red onions and the India pale ale-braised pork and spaetzle ($16.99) made with Noisy Cricket IPA from Friends & Allies Brewing in Austin.

“Really what we focus on is quality,” Amir said. “We do everything here in-house. We cure and smoke our own bacon. Our corned beef is brined in-house. … We’re a true scratch-kitchen.”

Along with an indoor dining room and bar, Oasthouse has two outdoor seating areas. One near the restaurant’s entrance is restricted to patrons of legal drinking age. A second, covered space out back is adjacent to a community playground.
