1. Former hotel converted into affordable apartment complex in North Austin

A former Quality Inn hotel in North Austin has been converted into affordable studio apartments, announced by Pfluger Architects and SHIR Capital in July.

The five-story Veer Apartments property features 174 pet-friendly units with rent under $1,000 per month.

The former hotel was one of a "handful of distressed or vacant properties" purchased by SHIR Capital in 2020, said Pfluger Architects principal Erik Leitner in an email to Community Impact.

2. Apple invests $100B more nationwide, bringing benefits for Austin area

An Aug. 6 announcement from Apple details plans for a $100 billion investment increase in the U.S., bringing the total to $600 billion over the next four years.

These investments include efforts to accelerate manufacturing, bridge gaps in the silicon supply chain and expand facilities, according to a news release.


The American Manufacturing Program seeks to increase U.S. manufacturing through a partnership with 10 companies nationwide, including Applied Materials, Samsung and Texas Instruments.

The new program aims to help Apple create an end-to-end supply chain for silicon in the U.S. Some local partnerships for this include Applied Materials in Northeast Austin.

Apple will also work with Samsung at its Austin fabrication plant to launch a new technology for chip making, according to the news release.

3. Old Alley Hot Pot brings Sichuan flavors to Northwest Austin

A new hot pot concept called Old Alley Hot Pot opened in early July in Northwest Austin.

Old Alley Hot Pot is a mala—meaning numbing and spicy—communal dining experience utilizing peppercorns, red chilies and Chinese spices inspired by the Sichuan province in China, according to a news release.

The restaurant serves meat such as beef, lamb, honeycomb tripe and duck gizzards cooked in house-made broths including classic beef tallow, pork bone or a vegan tomato-based broth.

4. Austin FC welcomes new members to Club's Ownership Group

In mid-July, the major league soccer team announced it would be expanding its ownership with five new Austin-based members.

In a media release, the company shared that Jenny Just, Matt Hulsizer, Tench Coxe, Tanuj Gulati and Dave Snyderman will all have non-controlling, minority stakes in the Club.
