Fresh-baked cupcakes will be available 24/7 when the newest Sprinkles Cupcakes opens Saturday, Feb. 4 in Domain Northside at 3210 Palm Way, Ste. 100, Austin.

Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson, who is often touted for kick-starting the country’s cupcake craze, opened her first cupcake bakery in 2005 in Beverly Hills. She is also a judge on Food Network's “Cupcake Wars” TV series.

Sprinkles sells its famous cupcakes, including the signature red velvet, as well as its homemade ice cream, cookies and ice cream sandwiches. The bakery’s Cupcake ATM will serve all flavors 24/7, and leftovers will be donated to a local food bank or homeless shelter.

Why is this country so crazy about cupcakes?

“A cupcake is something this country has always loved. It’s an innately American thing and part of someone’s childhood. Cupcakes used to be considered more of a kid-style treat, but we’ve used creative ingredients and a variety of flavors with an elevated design.”

Why did you want to open a bakery in Austin?

“The No. 1 question we get is, ‘When are you opening in Austin?’

“When we look for locations, we look for spots that draw businesses, families and tourists. Domain Northside offers access to those in multifamily buildings, office complexes and hotels.  It also offers the convenience of an outdoor shopping center, which makes order pickups easy.”

How did you come up with the idea for the Cupcake ATM?

“When I initially thought of it, it was a crazy idea my husband and I came up with. I was pregnant with our second child, and I wanted a cupcake. I own a bakery, and I couldn’t even get one. From that silly conversation was this more serious idea of how could we do that and service our customers anytime day or night.

“It’s a high-tech vending machine, basically. The key to it for us is this machine is stocked fresh. It’s more of a delicacy.”
