As work continues on the $612 million US 183 North mobility project, drivers can anticipate some closures spanning several months.

The details

There are multiple long-term closures for drivers to anticipate along US 183 North throughout the summer, according to the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority.

Continuous closures include:
  • The right two lanes of the southbound frontage road from Duval Road to Balcones Woods Drive will close starting in June for reconstruction work, followed by the left two lanes later in the summer.
Overnight closures include:
  • The left lane of the northbound frontage road from Loop 360 to Braker Lane will close overnight from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. through July.
  • Through the end of August, the right lane of the southbound frontage road will be closed from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. from Balcones Woods to the exit ramp for Braker Lane.
  • The left lane of the northbound frontage road will be closed through Sept. 15 from the Braker Lane entrance ramp to Balcones Woods.
Also of note

In early summer, traffic will shift into the newly paved center median gradually over the course of a few weeks. The new configuration will provide four lanes in each direction as opposed to the existing three, according to the CTRMA.

A closer look

Work being completed along the frontage roads is focused on building retaining walls and completing drainage improvements. Most closures will take place at night, but some continuous lane closures are needed to allow crews to work in certain areas, such as the Duval Road to Balcones Woods closure, which will leave one through lane during the summer, per a statement from the CTRMA.

The context

The US 183 North project spans 9 miles of US 183 from SH 45 in the north to MoPac in the south. The project broke ground in early 2022 to increase mobility, ease congestion in the area and create more reliable travel times, according to the CTRMA. Costing $612 million, project completion is still on track for 2026, CTRMA officials confirmed in February. The project will add two express toll lanes on the interior of the road plus one additional nontolled lane in each direction.
