The Contemporary has announced the unveiling of its latest accessibility initiatives starting this month at Jones Center and Laguna Gloria.

What’s changed?

The art institution is now partnering with KultureCity, EnChroma, Clovernook and Museums For All to provide a range of services to make the museums more accessible for all guests.

KultureCity will help the museums offer experiences with noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, weighted lap pads, visual aids and dedicated quiet spaces.

In a media release shared with Community Impact, the museum states it is the first art institution in Austin to partner with KultureCity.

The institution’s partnership with EnChroma will offer colorblind guests specialized glasses that selectively filter light to increase contrast between red and green color signals.

Exhibition and visitor materials have been translated into Braille with the help of Clovernook.

The Contemporary is now providing free admission to community members receiving SNAP benefits through its partnership with Museums For All.

Why it matters

Simone Alexander, senior manager of engagement and accessibility, said the changes are part of The Contemporary’s expansion of visitor accessibility to create a “more welcoming experience for all.”

“These investments reflect our dedication to evolving with the needs of our community, ensuring every visitor can engage fully and meaningfully with the art at both of our museum locations,” Alexander said.

What else?

In addition to its latest expansions, the centers offer further accessibility services at both locations with specialized programming including Spanish-language tours, stroller-friendly tours, regular free admission days every Thursday and ASL tours provided through a collaboration with Austin Community College.

Individuals can also attend regular free admission on Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m. at the institution’s Jones Center location.

The museum offers the following discounted admission options as well:

Seniors: $5

Students and Educators (with valid ID): $5
