The board formed a committee to survey potential colors and mascots for the new school. The survey was administered to community stakeholders, which consists of district residents within the new high school boundaries.
Survey results showed survey participants voted most for a unicorn mascot, with a lion and dragon coming in second and third, respectively.
Respondents also favored blue and gold for Long Creek's new colors.
During the Nov. 14 meeting, district staff also gave a presentation on the current academic scorecard for students.
The scorecard system monitors academic progress of students in NBISD through a point system that tracks student’s grades, discipline and attendance.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Kathy Kenney, a student who has earned zero points on the scorecard is at no risk of advancing to the next grade level, but a student who has five or more points in the areas of grades, discipline and attendance is at risk of failing the grade level they are in.
Kenney said in the previous school year there were 18.1% of students who were at high risk of not advancing to the next grade level. The goal for the 2022-23 school year is to bring that percentage down to 16.4%, Kenney said.
