The New Braunfels City Council on Oct. 11 approved a resolution to rename the New Braunfels Regional Airport to the New Braunfels National Airport.

The change was made to reflect the airport’s reclassification in 2021 as a National Airport by the Federal Aviation Administration. It is one of only 92 airports in the country with the classification.

The New Braunfels airport has been part of the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems since 1969. The NPIAS groups non-primary airports into five categories: national, regional, local, basic and unclassified.

National airports are located in metropolitan areas near major business centers and provide communities with access to national and international travel.
