McDonald said he expected City Council to accept his resignation at its Aug. 7 meeting and move forward with plans for a special election to replace him.
According to a July 18 news release from his campaign, McDonald will run for Precinct 2 in 2026. The seat is currently held by Cynthia Long, who took office in 2007, according to Ballotpedia.
What you need to know
McDonald is a Marine Corps veteran and a retired Austin Police Department officer, according to the release, which stated his background includes work in crisis response, infrastructure planning and regional coordination.
McDonald currently serves Place 3 for Leander City Council and is on the Capital Area Council of Governments, which coordinates collaboration at the regional level.
Additionally, he’s on the CAPCOG Clean Air Coalition, which works to develop clean air plans in Central Texas, according to its website.
Quote of note
McDonald said he hopes the full-time nature of being on the Commissioners Court will enable him to affect more change than spending 10-15 hours per week on City Council items.
“I believe I can make a much larger impact on our county but as well as the cities that are part of Precinct 2,” he said. “I care about all these places.”
What else?
McDonald won re-election to Leander City Council in May. He was first elected to the position in 2022, according to the city’s website.
