About 60 senior citizens who participate in the Leander Parks and Recreation Department’s Active Adults Program gave input April 25 on what options they would like to see at the city’s new senior center, expected to open in summer.

Attendees of the idea and feedback forum at the Leander Activity Center were able to go to different posters around the room and mark their support for various existing and prospective programs.

Two-minute impact

Leander’s active adult programming is currently offered at the Leander Activity Center, according to the city’s website. Once open, the programming will be moved to the city’s senior center.

The goal of the day was to learn what senior citizens want to see as part of the new senior center, said Ashlea Boyle, Leander’s parks and recreation director.

Boyle noted that of about 600 members of the Active Adult Program, roughly 60 were present for the feedback forum.

What they’re saying

Leander Mayor Christine DeLisle was at the event and spoke with a number of seniors about their concerns and wishes for the center.

“They love pickleball, so I hear that loud and clear,” she told Community Impact.

Additionally, DeLisle said there were concerns from people present that the incoming center would not be able to handle the already high demand for programming.

“I think we anticipated a much smaller grouping,” she said about the planning process for the center. “I think we’re going to need to take a good look at our programming, our space.”

DeLisle said one of the goals of the forum was to hear feedback on programming that will help city staff decide how to adapt to the high demand.

What else?

The city is considering options for how to adjust space at the upcoming center.

“One of the things that we’ve been talking about a lot today is the courtyard,” DeLisle said. “There’s a beautiful courtyard in the middle of the plans, which were done years ago.”

She noted that there are no firm plans on how to adjust yet, but city staff is discussing covering the courtyard and putting in a pickleball court, among other things.
