Tami Spearman moved to Liberty Hill in 2004 and spent years working for the city’s district as a high school teacher. After hearing that many of her friends were leaving the area to serve on a mission, Spearman had the idea to serve locally. Her desire to get more involved in the community, coupled with the lack of shopping outlets in Liberty Hill, inspired Spearman to leave her job as a teacher and open Simply Home Boutique in 2012.

“The store created a place where we can love on women locally and share Jesus with them and that was really the premise of why we opened,” Spearman said.

What they offer

The store, which celebrated 13 years in October, sells a selection of apparel, accessories, home goods, cookware, packaged food, gifts and holiday decor. Shoppers can find brands like Caren Bath and Body and enewton jewelry.

Spearman sources products for the store from the Atlanta market because it has the largest home and gift offerings. Opting to buy from the Atlanta market over the Dallas market allows Spearman to carry items that may not be sold in nearby shops, she said. When looking for new brands to bring into the boutique, Spearman said she looks for ones that have a good story, give back to the community or are faith-based businesses.

Fun for the family

Each year, Simply Home Boutique closes for a week while a team transforms the store for the holiday season. The tradition started when the boutique first opened and Spearman didn’t want customers to think the seasonal items for sale meant that they were exclusively a Christmas store. The store just had its 14th annual Christmas Reveal, which happens on the first Saturday of November and is the biggest event of the year, Spearman said.

“I have one family [where] all the girls in their family gather and that kicks off their holiday season,” Spearman said. “It's just a magical time and customers have been just great with support.”

Dig deeper

Spearman’s favorite aspect of owning a business in Liberty Hill is having loyal customers who have grown into friends and family.

“Our Liberty Hill community is so unique and special and we all love living there and being a part of it,” Spearman said.

Support from customers also enables Simply Home Boutique to give back to the community, Spearman said. Each year, the business participates in two seasonal shopping events, Holiday Around the Hill and Hop Around the Hill, where they donate proceeds to a local nonprofit organization. This year proceeds went to Dwelling Place.

Staying local

Spearman said that while she knows growth in Liberty Hill has brought larger retail chains, Simply Home Boutique has unique qualities that focus on human connection. The store offers custom gift baskets, wrapping services and a prayer wall for customers to add requests to.

“People may go shop at Target,” Spearman said. “I know they will, but I also know that we offer so many things that Target will not be able to offer...We will still wrap your gift and we will still hug you at the door and you can still call us and say, ‘Hey, can you pick something out and have that ready for us?’ And we're still going to be able to do all that.”
