An upcoming monument in Cedar Park will honor Central Texas Gold Star Families.

Gold Star Family members are those who have lost a parent, spouse, child, sibling or other loved one in military service, according to the United States Army website.

On Saturday, the American Legion Post 911 in Cedar Park will honor Central Texas Gold Star Families by dedicating a Gold Star Monument in Veterans Memorial Park, according to a statement from the office of state Rep. Tony Dale, R-Cedar Park.

“Recognizing and supporting the families of the fallen is a moral obligation of a grateful society,” said Dale, a member of American Legion Post 911. "Nothing can assuage their loss, but we can show our respect and thanks."

This will be the first Gold Star Monument in the state, according to the statement. The Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Gold Star Families Foundation intends to build a Gold Star Monument in each state, the statement said.

Williams, a WWII veteran who received the Congressional Medal of Honor, will issue remarks at the dedication ceremony, according to the representative’s statement.

The event takes place at Cedar Park Veterans Memorial Park, 2525 West New Hope Road, Cedar Park from 10-11 a.m.
