With Hurricane Harvey forecasted to hit the Texas coastline tonight and bring heavy rains to Central Texas, the cities of Cedar Park and Leander are aiming to help residents be prepared. The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio issued a flash flood watch for portions of Central Texas, including Travis and Williamson Counties, from Friday afternoon through Monday morning. According to the city of Cedar Park, the area could see 10 to 15 inches of rain and wind speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Both cities have released online statements on how residents can stay informed. Cedar Park's release said residents can prepare for anticipated heavy rainfall. “Our Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management stands ready to activate the City's Office of Emergency Management if necessary,” according to the website. “Police and Fire first responders as well as streets/drainage crews are on standby to work throughout the weekend as needed.” The city encouraged residents to follow three steps:
  • Have a plan: know what you would do, where to go, what to take and how to get in contact with loved ones.
  • Make a kit: create a container of supplies, including flashlights, batteries, a radio, bottled water, non-perishable food, cash and important documents.
  • Stay informed: stay up to date with local news coverage and emergency alerts.
According to the city of Leander, city officials are monitoring the hurricane. “Check your local forecast for updates, and abide by instructions from local authorities to protect life and property,” according the city's website. For more local updates, residents can check Cedar Park's and Leander's updates on the city websites.
