The city of Bee Cave is making strides on a nearly $960,000 project to add pedestrian sidewalks and a new crossing to Bee Cave Parkway and Bee Caves Road.

The overview

A staff report delivered at a December Bee Cave Development Corporation meeting included updates on the project, which is a joint effort between the BCDC and the Texas Department of Transportation.

The project will add sidewalks along Bee Cave Parkway from Market Street to Bee Caves Road, as well as along the south side of Bee Caves Road from the H-E-B parking lot to Tennison Hill Drive, according to agenda documents.

Additionally, the project will add push buttons, beacons and upgraded crosswalk striping across Bee Caves Road.

Diving in deeper

The project totals $959,650, with the city portion totaling $376,000. Additional funding for the project is primarily from a TxDOT Highway Safety Improvement Program grant, according to agenda documents.

“We’ve gotten our preliminary engineering cost estimates and we are right within the budget where we need to be, so we feel comfortable that our original budget estimates are still on target,” Bee Cave City Manager Julie Oakley said at the Dec. 9 meeting.

As of December, environmental scoping and the project kickoff were completed, agenda documents show. Sidewalk route design and the first phase of environmental review is in progress, and city staff is working with TxDOT on an updated project schedule.

What's next?

The city is required to submit the design to TxDOT in phases, with 30%, 60% and 90% deadlines. The 30% deadline is in May, while the 90% deadline is due in July.

Following all preliminary work, the project must be designed by Dec. 1 so it can be put out for bid, then start construction, Oakley said.
