At a Sept. 3 special council meeting, Lakeway approved a $625,697 construction bid for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Wild Cherry and Flint Rock Road.

The details

The intersection improvement is one of several road projects funded by the $17.4 million voter-approved 2022 transportation bond.

While the project was originally estimated to cost $391,000, City Manager Joseph Molis said the increased cost is due to the lack of electric utilities near the area.

As a result, the city incurred additional costs from working with Austin Energy to design a power source, Molis said.

To prevent the large cost increase in the future, the city plans to receive better utility mapping from Austin Energy to study ahead of the design phase.

Looking ahead

The project will begin sometime this fall, and Director of Public Works Dale DeLong said the construction will require temporary, single-lane road closures.

The rest of the bond package includes plans for road resurfacing, culvert replacements, sidewalk additions and other traffic light installations.

Projects in progress include:
  • Top O The Lake Drive culvert replacements: under construction; set to be completed in September
  • Main Street bridge and Birrell Street bridge additions: expected to begin construction in about 14 months
  • RM 620 lane widening: right of way acquired in September 2023; unknown timeline
  • Lohmans Crossing Road and Main Street traffic light addition: unknown timeline
