Negotiation of a $1.02 million design services contract with engineering firm Dunaway for Lakeway City Park was approved by council. The updated contract will go before council again for final approval at a future date, which was not set as of press time, Lakeway Communications Director Jarrod Wise said in an email.
Funds for the contract come from the city’s 2024 voter-approved parks bond, which included $22 million in plans for several projects across the city. The Lakeway City Park project is estimated to cost $10.65 million total, as of July.
“[Dunaway] did the conceptual plan, which got us to the parks bond and was overwhelmingly approved, but now we need to work through the final engineering and final design phase for [Lakeway] City Park,” Lakeway’s Director of Parks and Recreation Andra Bennett said.
Dunaway developed conceptual plans ahead of the bond election for the city's five major projects. For Lakeway City Park, these plans included an improved skate park, a new beginner skills bike park, a new boardwalk trail, overlook platforms, new pickleball courts and more. Dunaway’s proposal also includes at least one public meeting with community members for additional input.
The discussion
Council members included two revisions to the proposed contract, including adding quarterly updates from Dunaway to City Council free of charge and including a delivery timeline for elements of the project in the contract.
The timeline anticipates the project to go out for bid by March 2027 and for construction to begin June 2027. Revisions from council additionally requested additional language specifying penalties if these goals are not met.
What else?
City Council also unanimously approved the purchase of playground equipment for Butler Rough Hollow Park from Play & Park Structures for $430,738. The purchase includes a playground, ninja course and artificial turf, which were each reflected in the council-approved plan from July 21.
The equipment will be stored free of charge by Play & Park Structures until the city is ready for installation in 2026, according to city documents.
The total cost of the project is expected to be around $2.1 million and also include an amphitheater, a mountain bike course, a basketball area and a multisports field, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
