The city of Lakeway formally recognized a number of council, staff and community members for their efforts to assist their community during and after the Central Texas flooding in July.

The background

On July 4 and 5, catastrophic flooding impacted Travis, Kerr and Williamson counties, resulting in over 100 casualties.

In Lakeway, city officials and residents were recognized for recovery efforts and contributions made during the floods through a proclamation shared at an Aug. 4 City Council meeting.

What they’re saying

“Just a month ago, staff and I were up throughout the night of July 3 into the morning of July 4 determining the weather and canceling our parade and pivoting to a new activity,” Mayor Thomas Kilgore said. “Unfortunately, many other Texans were not so informed, and catastrophic flooding erupted throughout the Hill Country. We mourn the loss of all of those Texans.”

In the weeks following the floods, at least 27 Lakeway public servants were deployed, Kilgore said. Those recognized included:

  • Lakeway Police Department and telecom supervisors
  • Chaplain Craig Paczkowski
  • Regional Director for the Texas Law Enforcement Peer Network Kate Powell
  • Victim Services Coordinator Kara McLeod
  • Communications Director Jarrod Wise
  • Budget Analyst Jodi Lehman-Wills
  • Council member Matt Sherman
  • Director of Emergency Management Waheeda Yousofzoy

What else?

Mayor Kilgore also recognized council member Kent O’Brien and state Reps. Ellen Troxclair and Vikki Goodwin.

“There are also many other Lakeway residents who did not wish for public recognition, but we certainly know that they went out there with their time and or their treasure to make this happen,” Kilgore said. “It is the epitome of being a Texan that we take care of one another, especially in these times.”
