A zoning change for a new fire station belonging to Travis County Emergency Services District 6, or Lake Travis Fire Rescue, has been approved by Lakeway City Council.

What they’re saying

“The rezoning request is intended to accommodate the growing needs of the Lakeway community for essential public services, particularly to enhance public safety and emergency response times,” project manager Dan Brown with engineering firm Malone Wheeler said in a letter accompanying the zoning application.

The rezoning request was approved by City Council at its June 16 regular meeting, changing the land’s designation from R-3, or single-family residential, to GUI, or governmental, utility and institutional.

The details

An estimated timeline for construction of the fire station was not shared by city staff or project engineers at the meeting.

The proposed fire station would sit on a 3.8-acre plot of land located 700 feet north of the Serene Hills Drive and Hwy. 71 intersection. The land is currently vacant with no residences immediately adjacent to it, according to city documents.

What else?

The next closest fire stations to the proposed station are 4.1 miles away in Bee Cave, 4.7 miles in Lakeway or 5.8 miles in Spicewood, according to city documents. A proposed fire station at Flint Rock Road in Lakeway will be 2.9 miles away.

“Of course, this is public safety, so we definitely want to take LTFR’s word that this is where a fire station needs to be,” said Erin Carr, Lakeway director of building and development services.
