As construction crews approach a substantial completion deadline of the new West Lake Hills Municipal Complex on July 14, city officials are sharing updates regarding progress made on the new building.
The overview
At a City Council meeting May 28, project manager Stephen Karp highlighted recent progress made at the complex, located at 4010 Bee Caves Road. Interior work at the complex has continued throughout May, with large numbers of contractors onsite each day, Karp said.
“We’re getting down here to the end,” Karp said. “[Construction manager] SpawGlass has done a great job of keeping the job site just full of contractors every day, there’s never a day out there I pull on site where it’s half empty, it’s just a full house every day.”
In addition to interior work, which has included the installation of lights, air conditioning and paint, irrigation systems are also currently being installed, Karp said.
The parking lot outside the municipal complex has also been fully paved, though public parking won’t be available until construction is completed, City Administrator Trey Fletcher said.
Some context
Construction began on the new municipal complex in May 2024 as a result of the voter-approved Proposition A, which authorized $13.2 million for the new building. Later, City Council authorized an additional $9.5 million for land acquisition and cost escalations.
The new complex was needed due to West Lake Hills’ current city hall, constructed in 1983, no longer being up to current building code and showing signs of significant wood rot and decay, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.
What’s next?
Construction items remaining at the complex include elevator installation, landscape installation, and security and fire inspections, according to city documents.
Substantial completion of the complex is scheduled for July 14, and furniture will be put in after July 28, Fletcher said. On Aug. 11 the city’s police department will move in, and the following week city administration will follow, Fletcher said.
Aug. 27 is the estimated date that City Council’s first meeting will be held at the new complex.
