Construction of a new West Lake Hills municipal building, located at 4010 Bee Caves Road, is currently underway, scheduled for completion in July.

The overview

Construction on the complex began in early 2024. Significant progress has been made, with the main building structure now in place and roof-mounted heating and cooling units installed, according West Lake Hills’ website.

A vendor has been selected to provide furniture, fixtures, and equipment, which staff will review and select in the coming weeks.

In March, the last windows will be installed, at which point the main building will be fully dried-in–or waterproof–and permanent power will be supplied to the complex, according to the city website. Additionally, parking lot construction and elevator installation will take place.

A secondary storage building is also under construction, according to a presentation shared at a Feb. 26 council meeting.

The background

The new municipal complex, which was approved by voters during the city’s 2021 bond election under Proposition A, will house West Lake Hills’ City Council chambers, police department and city administrative offices.

The amount in funding authorized by voters was $13.2 million, according to West Lake Hills’ website. Since the proposition’s passing, an additional $9.5 million was authorized by City Council in consideration of land acquisition and cost escalations.

The complex sits on a plot of land across from Eanes Elementary School.

The current city hall building, located at 911 Westlake Drive, was built in 1983 and does not comply with current building codes, according to West Lake Hills’ website. Additionally, the structure shows signs of significant wood rot and decay.

Though city officials considered renovating the current complex, it was determined by City Council in March 2022 that the most practical option would be to construct a new complex. In February 2023, the city chose Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects and SpawGlass for design and construction of the project, respectively.

What’s next?

On Feb. 26, City Council discussed potentially hosting a public grand opening at the municipal complex upon its completion, but have not yet made any decision or shared any details regarding this event.
