The city of Rollingwood is launching Friends of Rollingwood Park—an initiative aiming to solicit donations and support improvements to the city’s public park, located at 403 Nixon Drive—following City Council approval Dec. 18.
The overview
The initiative was originally put forward by the Rollingwood Parks Commission. Donations for the park will go toward maintenance, beautification and preservation of the park area, according to agenda documents.
Maintenance would relate to smaller projects like distributing fertilizer, adding turf or fixing certain park features, council member Phil McDuffee said. The project would not be considered part of any larger capital improvement project.
What residents should know
Although the initiative is approved, the city is not yet accepting donations. Residents will be able to make donations upon signing up for water service or while paying monthly water bills, City Administrator Ashley Wayman said. The city also plans to maintain a webpage that will keep residents up to date on where donations are going, with updates being shared periodically on park maintenance and improvement projects, Wayman said.
A timeline for when the city will launch the webpage and accept donations is not yet available, but further details regarding the project will be discussed at the next parks commission meeting Jan. 14, interim City Secretary Makayla Rodriguez said.
What else?
A tree planting project for the park was also approved at the Dec. 18 meeting, with a budget not to exceed $50,000. The project includes tree plantings on the east side of the park’s playing fields and at the back of the parking lot, Parks Commission Chair Melissa Morrow said at the Rollingwood Community Development Corporation's Dec. 9 meeting.
