Null has served as the superintendent of Conroe ISD since 2018, and brings 23 years of experience to the table from his time as a deputy and assistant superintendent, principal and assistant principal, teacher, and athletic trainer.
“I look forward to the chance to get to meet everyone,” Null said. “... I know that we’ll have opportunities to visit along the way, and I really look forward to those opportunities—and I just cherish this moment.”
Null is set to start in the new position June 2, he said.
The overview
Null was named the lone superintendent finalist at the May 1 special board meeting, but law required the district to wait 21 days before holding the vote to approve employment.
“We are thrilled to have you here and excited that you have the full, unanimous support of our board, but also know that you have the support of our community, and we’re looking forward to having you as our leader,” board President Lauren White said.
Coming into LTISD, Null will face the district’s mounting budget shortfalls anticipated next year, alongside ongoing discussions about how to proceed with LTISD’s second high school amid enrollment concerns.
“If we function and we operate and do our jobs with love as the center of all that we do, then great things will happen for our children,” Null said, addressing the audience.
CISD, located in the northern Houston metro, has a student enrollment of over 70,000, Texas Education Agency data from 2023-24 shows.
During Null’s tenure at CISD, voters approved more than $1.8 billion in its 2023 bond for new schools, classrooms, technology and more. A more than $650 million bond was also passed by voters in 2019, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
“CISD will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve here," Null said in a statement earlier this month.
Following Null’s departure, CISD named Ted Landry as its interim superintendent, who offers 30 years of experience in public education, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
The background
Former Superintendent Paul Norton joined the district in August 2020, and the board voted to accept his resignation during a special board meeting Feb. 7.
The vote came after the board placed Norton on administrative leave effective immediately during a special meeting Dec. 17 following allegations of misconduct. Then-board President Erin Archer later said at the Feb. 7 meeting that the complaint against Norton "did not relate to students or district finances" and that a third-party investigation had closed.
The board then appointed Steve Flores as interim superintendent during a special meeting Feb. 26. Flores served as the superintendent of Round Rock ISD and Harlingen CISD for 13 years, and interim superintendent for Pflugerville and Taylor ISDs during the 2023-24 school year.
What’s next?
A contract disclosing superintendent pay for Null was not available as of press time. In his role at CISD, Null’s base pay was $365,881 for the 2024-25 school year, according to TEA data. Norton’s contract at LTISD paid $468,296 for 2024-25, per the TEA.
