Laura Bush Community Library, part of the Westbank Library system, at 9411 Bee Caves Road, Austin, will close April 1 and stay closed for the next five to six months as it undergoes construction.

The construction project will cost around $2.3 million, Public Service & PR Librarian Maureen Carey said.

“It is hard to believe Laura’s Library is 14 years old already. While we would have preferred to wait a few more years before doing updates, it makes sense financially to do this at the same time as the HVAC work,” library officials said in an announcement on its website. “It also means we don’t need to close again in a few years to replace fluorescent lights with LEDs and address issues with the restrooms, staff spaces, limited storage, and fire doors.”

Changes will include replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system; addressing facilities maintenance and updates; and making improvements to the outdoor spaces, the announcement said.

Outdoor space improvements will include extending the fencing in the back of the library all the way along the edge of the top terrace, creating an outdoor seating area behind the adult wing, and adding a new play and programming area behind the children’s area, library officials said.

The last day to pick up or return materials at Laura’s Library will be March 31. 512-327-3045. https://westbanklibrary.com
