Public hearing set for potential new emergency services district in Lake Travis area

Travis County residents interested in the proposed creation of Emergency Services District No. 16 will have an opportunity to speak to county commissioners in January. Commissioners set a public hearing on Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. in the Commissioners Courtroom, located at 700 Lavaca St., Austin.

If the new district is approved it would be located south of Lake Travis, covering parts of Lakeway to an area near Spicewood, according to county documents.

In October more than 100 western Travis County property owners signed and submitted a petition requesting the creation of the new ESD to Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt.

Next steps

The cities of Lakeway and Briarcliff, along with Travis County, must approve the petition.

Lakeway officials Dec. 17 discussed the creation of the new district. No action was taken. Mayor Sandy Cox said she anticipates the item to be back on City Council’s agenda during its January meeting.
