Although working with family can be stressful, Larry Claybough said keeping his business in the family makes the work more fun.

In 2013, Larry, along with his wife, Kay, opened Gatsby’s Menswear and Women’s Wear in the Hill Country Galleria with son Shannon and daughter-in-law Frances as its managers.

“Retail can be tiring, but it makes it worthwhile when you see your kids and grandkids having fun and enjoying themselves,” he said. “Then we get together, and we always have something in common.”

Gatsby’s is a full-line clothing store for men, women and children—similar in quality and price to a Nordstrom department store, Larry said.

In July, the Clayboughs opened a second location at Barton Creek Square Mall, 2901 S. Capital of Texas Hwy., Ste. U-02, Austin, managed by their nephew Austin Atchley with help from granddaughter Kayley Patty. Their daughter Kim Patty provides marketing services for the company.

Larry said he likes to joke that he cannot open a third location until his next grandson, who is 15 years old, is old enough to run the site.

“We’re strictly a family business, and I wouldn’t do it any other way,” he said.

Together, Larry and Kay have more than 20 years in retail industry experience—first as managers of department stores then as owners of four stores in San Diego. Larry said they missed seeing their grandchildren grow up, so in 2004 the couple sold their California shops to move to Austin and be closer to their family in Texas.

Larry said his wife chose the store’s name to pay homage to a past era “when people really dress[ed] up to the nines.”

“During the Roaring 20s—that was the first time anybody in the U.S. thought about dressing up,” Larry said. “People started paying attention to what they wore.”

Gatsby’s offers clothing styles for the whole family, including dress suits, ties, socks, T-shirts and even flip-flops. Its services include free alterations.

“We’re all about selling quality clothing at a fair price,” Larry said.
