Southwestern University will begin offering a Bachelor of Science in engineering in the fall 2026 semester, according to a news release.
“This is the first new degree that Southwestern has added in almost 20 years and one that our students have been eagerly asking for,” professor of physics Steve Alexander said in the release.

The new engineering program will be housed in the Department of Physics, expanding the department to become the Department of Physics and Engineering.
With the addition of the engineering major, SU will now offer four degree programs through the department:
“We expect that several of our physics majors will immediately take advantage of this opportunity and become engineering majors,” Alexander said. “By this time next year, we plan to graduate our first cohort of engineers, and in the fall, we hope to see a large influx of new students that want to study engineering at Southwestern.”
Two SU assistant professors of physics, Cody Crosby and August Kohls, will primarily teach the engineering program. SU aims to recruit more faculty for the department in the next few years, the news release states.
