Georgetown officials and community members celebrated the groundbreaking of the city’s first parking garage on March 26.

Located along Austin Avenue, the new garage will serve as an additional parking option for those who frequent or visit the city’s downtown area.

“We’re thrilled to be breaking ground on this much-needed parking garage for downtown,” Mayor Josh Schroeder said in the March 22 news release. “This garage helps us address some of our parking challenges downtown and will ensure Georgetown remains a vibrant and welcoming destination for years to come."

The details

Costing $19.8 million, the four-level downtown parking garage will bring an additional 315 parking spaces to the area.

The new garage is an answer to the rising demand for additional parking options in downtown, which is attributed to increased activity in the area, according to the release.

Further, the downtown parking garage will help lessen the amount of visitors defaulting to neighborhood streets for parking relief.

A long time coming

Planning for this project began nearly a decade ago, when it was first recommended in the city’s 2015 Downtown Parking Study, according to the release.

“Many citizen groups and councils have worked on [this project],” Schroeder said. “It was a great community conversation, but to see us get to an end product that we can all appreciate and love is an awesome experience.”

The downtown parking garage is expected to reach completion by September 2025.
