Garey Park, a 525-acre public park and event space under construction between Georgetown and Leander, will open June 9, according to Georgetown Parks Director Kimberly Garrett.

The official opening will follow 15 months of construction, three years of design and more than a decade of planning.

The park’s namesakes, Jack and Camille Garey, donated their 525-acre ranch and house, located in Georgetown’s extraterritorial jurisdiction on FM 2243 about 6 miles west of I-35, to the city in 2004 along with a $5 million cash donation.

A $35.5 million parks bond package approved by Georgetown voters in 2008 also helped fund portions of the park’s $13.5 million construction cost.

Once completed, Garey Park will be about 1 1/2 times larger than Austin’s Zilker Park in terms of size.

The Gareys’ former home will be utilized as an event center, and the land surrounding the house will include an equestrian facility and horse trails, “play ranches” for both children and dogs, hiking trails and open play fields.
