While some cats enjoy peace and quiet combined with window watching, others prefer active play with a person to keep them company.

At Whiskers Luxury Cat Boarding, cats of all kinds and personalities can find a home away from home while their owners are away for extended periods.

The backstory

Co-owner Jennifer Miller was inspired to pursue a second career after teaching. With years of experience in raising and showing Bengal cats, Miller was inspired to create a business that revolved around felines.

In March 2014, Miller opened the cat boarding business with her daughter-in-law Twyla Miller, who had a background in rescuing wild animals and has been a self-proclaimed animal lover her whole life.

What they offer

The business offers cat boarding services for a minimum of two days and as long as the entire summer.

The location first opened with 21 rooms. It has since expanded into the suite next door, and now offers 32 rooms.
The boarding center offers rooms ranging from sizes small to playroom in which some rooms have beds, climbing trees, cat wheels and windows to look at birds at they feed on the bird feeders placed outside. (Dacia Garcia/Community Impact)

Cats from the same family share rooms, and room sizes range from small to playroom. The company has a team of four who care for each cat guest by feeding them, giving medication, offering snuggles and engaging in interactive play time.

“Everything is about what makes the cat happy,” Miller said. “That’s where our cat technicians come in. Throughout the day, they’ll hang out with each cat and provide some sort of enrichment—whatever [the cats] want.”

The facility creates a cat’s dream space with bird programming on the televisions in each room, hamsters and gerbils in eyesight of different cat rooms, and a bird cage housing colorful finches to create tweeting white noise throughout the day.

“We could be packed and have a full house and have about 45 cats here or we could have 20 cats here and it’s still going to feel [the same], which is cool,” Twyla Miller said.

More details

After being open for over a decade, the Millers have their fair share of charismatic stories to remember each furry friend who has boarded at the center.

“I think there’s a lot of reward to this job and that probably stands out to us the most sometimes,” Miller said.
