“Yoga is one of those things that really changed my life,” Thomas said. “It is something I know I can and will do for the rest of my life.”
Prior to opening Shine Yoga in 2016, Thomas owned and operated Journey Gymnastics in Georgetown for 15 years. She also co-owns Texas Academy of Gymnastics in Leander, which opened in August 2019.
While she has worked with kids most of her life, transitioning into adult physical education was easy.
“People come in here, and they are happy to be here. ... It is a peaceful place, and it suits everyone’s lifestyle,” Thomas said.
She was introduced to yoga in 2012 by practicing Bikram yoga and went on to become a certified yoga instructor.
“I fought my brain for a long time thinking that [gymnastics and yoga] couldn’t be a real job when really I have impacted thousands of kids’ and families’ lives over the years,” Thomas said.
Shine Yoga offers two to three classes a day with an average class size of 10-20 people.
The small studio specializes in four classes: hot yoga, sculpt, barre and yin yoga. Thomas said during her heated vinyasa flow class, the room is set between 90-100 degrees.
“Hot yoga is just as much a mental challenge as it is physical,” Thomas said.
Thomas said each of the business’s seven instructors choreographs a particular series of breath work and movement, so participants never get the same class twice.
Thomas also said instructors are happy to assist students in modifying postures to accommodate an illness, an injury or a lack of mobility.
Additionally, the studio offers aerial yoga clinics once a month.
Thomas said she hopes to teach the community to love their bodies.
“Going into 2023, we want to continue to love and grow our community,” she said.
