Cherry Creek Catfish Restaurant on Manchaca Road has served seafood and traditional Texas fare since 1994.
The backs of employees’ shirts read “Keep South Austin Fried,” the restaurant’s variation of “Keep Austin Weird.”
The dining area is decorated with nautical and Texas memorabilia on the walls.
Fried catfish, fried shrimp, hush puppies, french fries, fried okra, fried pickles and fried green tomatoes are just some of the items on the menu.
Texas- and Southern-inspired dishes, including chicken-fried steak and gumbo made with crawfish and shrimp, also appear on the menu. Co-owner David Mossell said the chicken-fried steak is one of the most popular dishes even though the restaurant specializes in catfish.
In a health-conscious city such as Austin, Cherry Creek also serves non-fried foods, including grilled catfish; shrimp and chicken; fish tacos; and salad with blackened, grilled or fried chicken.
The restaurant also continues to attract loyal customers, Mossell said. They occasionally line up outside the restaurant before it opens at 11 a.m.
“We have consistent food and a quality of service,” co-owner Danny Lenertz said.
Lenertz and Mossell took ownership of Cherry Creek in February 2011. Lenertz, from Marfa, and Mossell, from San Angelo, wanted to bring a West Texas-style restaurant to Austin, they said.
“We instilled some core values that meant a lot to us growing up in West Texas, [such as] work ethic,” Mossell said.
