Sterlin McGruder, who has served as principal at Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy since the school opened in 2014, will now take over the same role at Northeast Early College High School.

The Austin ISD board of trustees made the appointment at its Nov. 18 meeting. McGruder will replace interim Principal Alisia Longoria at Northeast starting in the January semester.

The all-boys Gus Garcia YMLA and the all-girls school Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy both opened in East Austin in 2014. McGruder came to Austin that year from another single-sex academy, according to his biography on the school’s website: He previously served as principal of all-boys Kennedy Middle School in Grand Prairie ISD, part of a 13-year career in Grand Prairie.

The board also named David Crissey principal of the new Southwest Elementary School.
