Less than four months before Senate Bill 11 goes into effect, Austin Community College is scheduling a series of forums designed to examine how campus carry will look on its 11 campuses once implemented.
The state campus carry law, passed during the 2015 legislative session, says people with a concealed carry permit can carry a concealed gun on college campuses—with some exceptions.
ACC District President Richard Rhodes said a task force has been examining how four-year universities—who were
required to implement the law last August—have formed and enforced their policies over the past year.
A
survey has also been posted to the ACC website asking responders what they know about campus carry and how they feel about the new law.
"We've had a huge response to the survey," said Rhodes, adding the biggest misunderstanding seems to be that people are mistaking campus carry for open carry, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2016 and authorizes individuals to obtain a license to openly carry a handgun in the same places that allow the licensed carrying of a concealed handgun.
Open carry is still prohibited at all Texas colleges.
The ACC forums will include a brief presentation and then open to the community for comment. A presentation of the college’s draft recommendations will be shared at the final forum, scheduled for April 28 at the ACC's Highland campus, 6101 Airport Blvd, Austin. The forums will also be live-streamed.
