After piloting the service with limited geographical reach beginning in 2013, the city of Austin will extend its curbside compost collection—the first of what is slated to become a citywide expansion by 2020 if City Council moves forward with it.
This brings the total curbside customer count to 54,000, according to the city's website.
With the expansion, the average city taxpayer is expected to see an 85-cent monthly increase in Austin Resource Recovery fees. Austin Resource Recovery is the department that oversees composting and recycling services.
Curbside compost pickup is one of several so-called zero waste initiatives at the city, which aims to divert 90 percent of materials from landfills by 2040.
